Can I get a tracking number for first class mail?

There are two kinds of First Class shipping: First Class Mail and First Class Package Service.
Within First Class Mail, there is a package type called "Large/Flat Envelope". This is essentially a flat envelope you would use to ship documents. It is the least expensive service you can get with USPS through ShippingEasy and it is not eligible for tracking services.
On the other hand, within First Class Package shipping, there is a package type we refer to as a Thick Envelope (3/4").  It can be used to ship documents or thin objects that are less than 3/4" thick.  It can be a little more expensive, but it includes tracking.
Even though USPS does not include tracking on the very cost efficient First Class "Large/Flat Envelope", they do return a reference number when a label is purchased. We agree it’s confusing – to all of us, including your buyers. So, we have hidden it across the board: SHIPMENT HISTORY and Shipping Confirmation Emails do not include this fairly useless number

How Much Does USPS Tracking Cost?

One of the many options that you can add on to your shipment is the ability to track and confirm its delivery. But how much does USPS tracking cost? In some cases this can be a very inexpensive feature, but for volume shipping it can get more costly. Understanding exactly what USPS tracking is, and what you can expect it to do for you, is the only way to decide if you need to spend money on it.

How much does USPS tracking cost?

On the individual package, for any First Class, Priority Mail or Priority Express Mail package, the cost of tracking is very low. It is only $1.05 directly at the post office counter, or you can add it to your online purchase for $0.23. The tracking must be added at the time of shipping. You cannot purchase tracking for packages that are not yet shipped. In other words, you can’t tie it to a shipping number. Once the package has been shipped, you cannot add tracking to it.

What tracking can and cannot do

It is important to understand that tracking a package is not the same as insuring a package or certifying its receipt. Those are all different options that you can choose for your shipment. All tracking does is tell you when a package has left its origination point and has been received by USPS, and when USPS has delivered the package to the address of record.

Why does my package have a tracking number but no tracking updates appear?

This is a common complaint from customers who are using USPS tracking. It comes from a misunderstanding of how tracking is used by USPS. Where FedEx and UPS offer tracking services that update you on the location of the package, USPS only will track the fact that the package was received for shipment and that it was delivered. It may or may not be tracked at the points in between. For most packages, this is enough. For some packages, being able to see where it is on its journey to the destination address is very important, and you may want to opt for different type of delivery service.

How much does USPS tracking cost for commercial accounts?

While offering tracking for your customers may seem like a winning situation for your commercial account, you may want to think twice about it. While Commercial USPS shipping accounts, both standard and Commercial Plus, can get volume discounts on the cost of shipping – there isn’t a comparable discount available on tracking.
That isn’t to say that no discount exists, but that you need to weigh how important tracking will be to your customers. For example, customers that are ordering electronics are going to be inclined to want tracking more than customers who order books. The fragility of the item, and the potential for the item to be an immediate need, should drive your decision about whether or not to pay extra for tracking.

What is USPS Tracking?

USPS Tracking is a way for you to make sure that your most important packages make it to their final destinations. The US Postal Service can tell you the date, time and zip code where your item was delivered, giving you peace of mind. If the postal carrier tries to attempt a delivery, you’ll get the date and time of that attempt, too.

Types of USPS Tracking

USPS offers two types of tracking – retail and electronic.

Retail USPS Tracking: USPS sells retail tracking at its Post Offices. Just fill out PS Form 152, which is a bright green label that is available at the customer desk. You can check the status of your item by entering a code online at USPS’s Track and Confirm page or by calling a number on the form. Stamps.com customers can use retail USPS Tracking by combining PS Form 152 with either NetStamps labels or when printing postage directly onto envelopes.

Electronic USPS Tracking: If you print postage from an online service, such as Stamps.com, the program will include electronic USPS Tracking on your package for free for all mail classes.

How Does USPS Tracking Work?

USPS Tracking service is represented by a bar code that is either printed on your shipping label or attached to your letter or package with a sticker. In addition to information about the item’s final destination, the bar code allows the USPS to track how your item moves from city to city. The sticker, also called PS Form 152, is available for free at the post office and must be filled out by hand. Delivery status may be checked by entering the USPS Tracking number online at USPS’ site or at Stamps.com if you’re a customer.

USPS Tracking is free when purchased at the Post Office. USPS Tracking can be combined with other services, including Return Receipt, Return Receipt for Merchandise, Collect on Delivery (COD), Domestic Insurance, Registered Mail, Restricted Delivery and Special Handling.

Some items cannot be sent with USPS Tracking of any kind. These items include periodicals, letters and flat pieces sent by First-Class Mail, Standard Mail letters, Enhanced Carrier Route Standard Mail pieces and mail paid with pre-canceled stamps.

What is USPS Delivery Confirmation?

Also known as “tracking”, delivery confirmation helps you track and confirm your packages by letting you know the date and time your shipment has been delivered or that a delivery attempt was made.  
Delivery confirmation is good for many situations, such as when you are shipping high value goods, when you want to know when your packages are delivery, or when you want your customers to know when they should expect their shipments.
Delivery confirmation is required when insuring a package, either through USPS or Shipsurance.
NOTE: delivery confirmation is not the same as insurance.
Tracking is also helpful when reporting a lost shipment. If a First-Class Mail or Priority Mail shipment has not arrived within five (5) Postal business days from its date of mailing, you can report the loss via phone or web:
  • Call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777) where a customer service representative will document your mail loss complaint.
  • Visit the Postal Inspection Service Web site and complete a mail loss report.

  • Contact the USPS direct at 1-800-222-1811.
  • View real-time tracking status from your ShippingEasy SHIPMENT HISTORY.

Delivery confirmation is included in some services:

    • Priority Mail
    • Priority Mail Express
    • Parcel Select
    • Media Mail
    • First Class (excluding the Large Envelope/Flat)
    • Most Military Mail (APO/FPO destinations)
  • Available on some international shipments.  Further restrictions apply. 
  • Not available on First Class Large Envelope/Flat

General restrictions apply:

Package must be greater than ¾ inch thick.  Thinner contents must be placed and sent in a rigid box or container that won’t lose its shape or collapse into a flat or letter-sized piece during handling and delivery.
